The Garden of Freedom, located in Germany, is a positive example of a forward oriented commemorative culture, which is reflected in a work of art in public space. In light of a painful and traumatizing experience of people in our world, the central element of the monument site describes the Tree of Life as a way toward inner peace and inner freedom. The internal development works in the external social processes. Thus the Garden of Freedom shows a responsible and peaceful way to handle the burden of the past; to transform it: developing into a free and mature civic society means learning politically the lesson of the past. So it is a memorial for the present; a wake-up call and a beacon for the future.
