The Riesling-Estate »Dr. Hermann« with more than 10,5 hectares of vineyards is managed by Rudi Hermann and his son Christian. Winegrowing has a tradition in the Hermann family of several hundred years. The present estate was created in 1967 when the renowned estate Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben in Ürzig was divided.

In the following years the vineyards was steadily extended and with the construction of a large modern cellar premises production was moved from Ürzig to Erden.

The Hermanns concentrate on the production of Riesling wines on the steep rock slopes of the famous vineyards of the »Erdener Prälat«, »Erdener Treppchen« and the »Ürziger Würzgarten«. In all their vineyards they grow exclusively ungrafted Riesling stock which deliver the finest Riesling wines.

Quality starts in the vineyard. Restrained pruning of the vines, combined with yield reduction, careful and natural cultivation of the vineyard-soil and selective harvesting of the grapes by hand guarantee that great wines are created, distinguished by a homogenous aroma structure.

Several phases of selective harvesting allow highly valuable Spätlese-, Auslese-, Beeren- and Trockenbeerenauslese-Wines to be produced.
The grapes are very carefully processed in an ultra modern pneumatic press.

After a slow fermentation process of 6 to 12 weeks in stainless steel tanks, the wines mature on the fine yeast without exposure to oxygen. This conserves their aromas and a long lasting freshness.

The estate's three best vineyards, »Ürziger Würzgarten«, »Erdener Prälat« and »Erdener Treppchen«, where almost 2000 years ago already the Romans grew vines, absolutely belong to the top-vineyards of the world for white wines.

Ürziger Würzgarten

The red sandstone and slate soil creates the unique character of the
Ürziger Würzgarten. Especially old, own-rooted Riesling vines deliver
excellent wines with exotic-spicy aromas. The wines have an enormously
high potential to develop when aging.

Erdener Prälat

The Erdener Prälat with only 1.5 ha vineyards ranks as one of the best and most widely known steep vineyards of the Mosel.
The vineyard is extremely steep and planted with own-rooted Riesling vines, which are up to 100 years old.
Perfect exposure to the sun, grey and red slate and an extraordinary warm micro-climate enable noble Rieslings of the highest class to be produced every year.

Erdener Treppchen

In the “Erdener Treppchen” you find many varieties of slate. Creamy, highly elegant and fine wines with a pronounced mineral note are produced from the soils of red, grey and clay slate.
