EGOSOFT is a computer game developer founded in 1988 and based in Würselen, Germany. Its first products were for the Amiga, but it later became a PC game developer.

Best known for its X game series, a series of space simulator games noted for combining open-ended gameplay, dynamic market-driven economics and compelling storyline. The series began in 1999 with X: Beyond the Frontier.

Since then, the series has expanded with two sequels and many standalone expansions up to X3: Albion Prelude.

In 2013 EGOSOFT released a new game playing in the X universe, but with quite a lot of changes to the core gameplay: X Rebirth was followed up by two Expansions (X Rebirth: Teladi Outpost in 2015 and X Rebirth: Home of Light in 2016) and finally a VR Version in 2017 under the name "X Rebirth VR Edition".

Announced next for 2018, is the long awaited X4: FOUNDATIONS, which brings together the heritage of the X series with the new technology of X Rebirth and a completely redesigned graphics engine based on Vulkan.
