Watermark began in 2008 as a three-year, $4M commitment under ITT Corporation and, through partnerships with leading nonprofits and the participation of employees, the program has improved the lives of more than 500,000 people around the world.

In 2010, ITT pledged an additional $10.5M to expand the program and serve one million more people by 2013. In 2011, Xylem announced it would continue the program as Xylem Watermark and fulfill the new commitment.
